Species: African Leopard (Melanistic)
Name: Bagheera
Status: Black Leopards are rare in the wild but are thriving in captivity.
Distribution: They live throughout South Africa and South Asia.
Size: Leopards weigh between 65-175 lbs with males weighing about 50% more than females. Their body length is between 40-75 in. long Their tails are between 28-37 in. long.
Food: They eat reptiles, birds, small mammals, and occasionally small carnivores.
Habitat: Black Leopards usually live in moist, dense forests where their dark coat is an advantage.
Tidbit: Black Leopards are also referred to as Black Panthers. Black Panthers are not an actual species. The name is used to describe 3 or 4 melanistic (black) cats such as the Jaguar, Leopard, or the Serval.
