Name: Spike and Lexi
Status: African Porcupines are thriving both in the wild and in captivity.
Distribution: Italy, Sicily and along the Northern coast of Africa as far south as Tanzania and northern Congo.
Size: Both sexes are similar in appearance, ranging in length from 14.5 to 18.5 inches long, and weighing from 30 to 50 pounds.
Food: Mostly dog food and fruit, but occasionally they gnaw on bones.
Tidbit: The African porcupine is one of 5 species of crested porcupines. It is a large rodent walking flat-footed on all fours with a very short tail. The spines on the tail are short and stout and are also hollow, which makes them rattle when they shake.
